our lady of lourdes

As the Mother of God and the source of abundant graces, there is perhaps no other biblical figure has as many titles as the Virgin Mary. She is widely revered and honored by people around the world and is know to us by many different titles that celebrate her divinity.

Why does the Virgin Mary have so many names & titles? The short answer is because each title celebrates different aspects of her and we come to her with different intentions at different times.

Here are 10 of the most popular titles of the Virgin Mary.

  1. Mother of God: This title reflects Mary’s unique role as the mother of Jesus, who is both fully human and fully divine.
  2. Theotokos: This is a Greek term meaning “God-bearer” or “Mother of God.” This title was declared a dogma by the Church after the veneration of Mary in the year 431. The name translates to God-bearer, or Mother of God.

Whatever title we use to come into her presence and call upon her divine intercession, it is important to note that whilst we adore and pray for her intercession on our behalf, we do not actually “worship” Our Lady. She serves as a shining beacon of light and powerful intercessor who watches over us as her children.
