Coping with Stress and Anxiety

Stress, anxiety, and mental issues can be a challenging and overwhelming experience, especially when trying to navigate life’s everyday obstacles. However, as believers, we have a source of comfort and strength that can help us overcome these difficulties – faith in God.

Recent studies show that stress and anxiety at such an excessive level can become causes of chronic health problems, reduced quality of life, or worse, even mental health disorders. This is why mental health advocates unceasingly remind us to take care of our mental well-being. In the long run, a healthy mental state can help us a lot in getting through our day-to-day life.

The peace that “surpasses all understanding” is a biblical concept that pertains to a state of inner peace and calm. This comes from a portion of the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians. Let us read this passage:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

– Philippians 4:6-7

As Catholics, we are called to put our trust in God and rely on Him for all things, especially during difficult times.

Pray Regularly for Wisdom

Prayer plays a great role in coping with stress and anxiety. Prayer brings comfort and peace to those who are stressed and anxious. It gives people a sense of connection to a higher power. Prayer allows us to communicate our fears and concerns.

Through prayer, we receive support and strength, and we are assured of the guidance of God, especially during challenging times. Prayer gives us comfort and hope that things will be fine.

Prayer connects us with God and disconnects us from our anxieties and concerns. This helps us to be more relaxed and relieved from stress. When we are praying, we are taken a step away from these problems and worries. Through prayer, we can see things in a different light. Prayer leads us to realize that even during tough times, a greater and mightier God is helping, leading, and accompanying us.

Prayer provides us with a sense of security and safety. We are able to let go and surrender all of our fears and doubts. By praying, we are expressing our dependence and trust that we are in the good hands of the Lord God.

Prayer also helps us build resilience, strength, and courage. It may not remove all our problems, but prayer helps us to face them fearlessly and courageously. Amid all our worries and stress, prayer provides us with calmness and a trusting disposition.

Meditation and Scriptural reading

Meditation and reading the Word of God in the Scriptures are also effective ways of alleviating stress and anxiety. These practices give us comfort, peace, and firm resolve, all of which help in lessening our stress and worrying.

Regular meditation and Bible reading aid in developing a more peaceful and focused view of things that are happening around us. Through these practices, we turn to God and listen to His voice. Reading passages from the Bible and reflecting on them offer us wisdom and guidance during trying moments in our life. These help us connect with God and know Him more deeply.

Connect With Others, Form a Community

Being part of a supportive and encouraging community of believers can make all the difference in overcoming stress and anxiety. Attending Mass regularly, participating in Bible studies, and joining a prayer group can provide opportunities to connect with others and grow in faith.

Practice Gratitude

Gratitude is a powerful tool in overcoming stress and anxiety. When we focus on what we are thankful for, it can shift our perspective and help us see the good in life. The Bible reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Sleep and rest

Stress and anxiety sap out every ounce of energy in our bodies. These can lead to poor sleep patterns and lack of sleep and rest. As a result, there is an increased level of stress and anxiety for us.

It is very important for us to prioritize getting enough sleep and rest. A good night’s sleep and rest help restore and replenish our bodies and minds. This allows us to feel refreshed and invigorated the next day. Sleep and rest can also improve our cognitive functions and regulate our mood. Such a state can then help us think more clearly, make sound decisions, and more effectively manage our stress and anxiety.

Set boundaries and take a break from social media

Social media has become a pervasive part of our daily life. Yes, it can be a good source of information, connection, and entertainment. However, overexposure to it may result in stress and anxiety.

Detaching from social media can also help us cope with stress and anxiety. Taking a break from our social media platforms reduces our exposure to negativities in life such as conflicts, hate speech, violence, and harassment. By detaching from social media, we reduce our exposure and therefore improve our health.

By setting boundaries for ourselves, like avoiding overcommitment, setting realistic and achievable goals, and learning how to decline when necessary, our stress and anxiety are reduced. Through this, we achieve a healthy sense of control over our own lives.

Develop a hobby

Hobbies can provide us with a welcome distraction from what stresses us every day. It also allows us to give our attention to something fun, enjoyable, and fulfilling. Do an artwork, make a garden in your backyard, cook a new recipe, write a poem or journal, or play musical instruments – these are just a few examples of what we can do to relieve stress and anxiety.

Life takes us to some rough roads. These challenging moments can bring us unnecessary stress and anxiety. But let us remember, whatever problems or struggles we might face, may we never forget that God makes all things good for us who trust in Him. He values and loves us – and He is with us in all these challenges.
