Why Is Our Relationship With Mary so Important?

We know that Mary was the mother of Christ, and was immaculate without sin. Surely this alone is worthy of praise & admiration, but what makes her so special in our quest to seek God’s miracles? And what was God’s plan our relationship with the Virgin Mary?

Mary’s Significant Role in God’s Grand Plan

Within the pages of the Gospel of John, we find Jesus’ final words laden with profound significance. As He was suffering on the cross, Christ addresses his mother and proclaimed, “Woman, behold your son!”. When He said this, Jesus was referring to his beloved disciple, with which He too addressed with the words “Behold, your mother!” (John 19:26-27).

Looking deeper into symbolism of this grand gesture in His final hours, there is more than just a simple act an act entrusting Mary into the care His disciple. Christ’s beloved disciple represents the nature of men, one that is imperfect and “tainted” with original sin. By saying the words, Jesus established a new relationship between men and that of His immaculate mother. Not only is men entrusted into her care, but we too are called to behold her in reverence, respect and love as our dearest mother.

In essence, she becomes the mother to every disciple, every follower of Jesus.

Our Participation in God’s Divine Plan

But why did God opt for this? Why do we need Mary? The answer resides in God’s approach to working within human history within His plan of redemption.

God often chose to work through intermediaries or “middlemen.” He could have appeared all around the world, and everyone would fall upon His tremendous power and authority in an instant. But because of the free will that He has given to us out of love, He often relies on a more subtle approach, allowing us to make the ultimate decision for ourselves.

Instead He instructed his disciples to “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations”, emphasizing His choice to touch people’s lives through others. We also see the importance of intermediaries in the way we practice our faith. We are called to pray for one another seeking the presence of God, and in doing so we become intercessors, conduits through whom God reaches others.

Mary’s Role as a Mediator

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”

– John 14:6

This leads us to the unique position of the Virgin Mary. God chose to reach us through her and gifted her to us as a spiritual mother. Her mission is to constantly guide us to Jesus who is our very salvation.

When we, as Catholics, “pray” to Mary, it isn’t an act of worship like when we pray to God. It’s a plea for her intercession, akin to asking our fellow Christians for prayers. This request for intercession is what we ask of Mary in the Hail Mary prayer.

This beautiful prayer encapsulates the immense blessing of having a spiritual Mother to guide us towards unity with God. In accepting her, we honor God’s divine plan.
